What is a Tree Survey?

A tree survey is a tree assessment either of a single tree, group of trees or woodland to understand their condition, health and sometimes the impact of the built environment surrounding them. A tree survey can involve:

  • Visual inspection
  • Aerial inspection
  • PiCUS Sonic Tomograph inspection

Following the inspection and data collection a report is created detailing the findings from the survey and any recommendations.

More Info on Tree Surveys

BS 5837 Tree Survey, Tree Constraints Plan

Where trees are on or adjacent to a proposed development site, information in accordance with the recommendations of BS5837:2012 Trees in relation to design, demolition and construction, is required for the planning application.

The main purpose of the survey is to determine the potential impact of a development on important trees in the area. It is usually accompanied by a Tree Constraints Plan (TPP).

Arboricultural Method Statement

‍An Arboricultural Method Statement (AMS) describes the methodology for protection of trees during construction. It is usually accompanied by a Tree Protection Plan (TPP) and provides all the information required for contractors to fully protect trees during construction.

Arboricultural Impact Assessment

An Arboricultural Impact Assessment (AIA) determines the effect of a planned development on the existing tree stock. It identifies trees to be removed and those to be retained and it highlights the potential conflicts between retained trees and the planned development.

Arboricultural Site Supervision

Planning authorities often require that construction work on sites with trees is periodically supervised by an arboriculturalist. During construction work, the arboriculturalist may attend the site regularly to ensure that tree protection measures are being carried out to the required specifications and ensure that all planning conditions are being met by the client.

Mortgage Reports

Mortgage lenders will often request that a tree survey is undertaken before they will approve a mortgage. This request is often in response to the building surveyor noting the presence of trees and recommending that a mortgage tree report is obtained. Such a report will assess the physiological and structural condition of the tree(s) and an evaluation of the likely relationship with the property.

Veteran Tree Management

Ancient and veteran trees are of particular importance in terms of the diversity of wildlife that they support and their aesthetic and cultural value. They may require some form of management to ensure their longevity and to maintain the value associated with them.

Appropriate management of these special trees can only be recommended following a veteran tree survey. This will include, recording the locations of the trees, categorising them in terms of their vitality and/or structural condition and identifying the method of previous management.

Quantified Tree Risk Assessment

Tree safety management is a matter of limiting the risk of significant harm from tree failure whilst maintaining the benefits conferred by trees. The Quantified Tree Risk Assessment (QTRA) system applies established and accepted risk management principles to tree safety management. It quantifies the risk of significant harm from tree failure in a way that enables tree managers to balance safety with tree value and operate to a predetermined limit of reasonable or acceptable risk. (Quantified Tree Risk Assessment Ltd).

Tree Condition Reports, Management and Planting Plans

From surveys of large tree stocks to a detailed survey of individual trees, we provide tree surveys to satisfy all objectives. Our tree surveys can be tailored to meet specific requirements. We use the information collected during a tree survey to formulate plans for the strategic management of trees into the future, including advice on new planting.

Educational Site Tree Surveys

Trees on a school site result in the school having a duty of care to manage them and balance the risk of harm from tree failure with the many benefits that trees bring. We offer a Tree Risk Assessment for schools through to a full tree management programme.
